Corporate shareholders and others affected by commerce around the world are increasingly calling for businesses to be more accountable for their social and environmental behaviors. Thus, the sustainability of a company is now often expressed in terms of its social and environmental impacts, and the extent to which it manages to avoid doing damage on either front. This is arguably what the new field of Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR, is all about, at least insofar as the social side of the issue is concerned.
